Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

OHC is excited to bring this program to Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington Counties again for 2011. Funded through the Division of Aging and Adult Services, State of Arkansas Department of Human Services, the program provides those 60 and over, who meet income guidelines (one person household up to $1,679 monthly income; two person household up to $2,268 monthly income; larger households also qualify), a booklet of ten $5 coupons, accepted at NW Arkansas Farmers Markets. The coupons apply to the purchase of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. This program allows for ONLY ONE COUPON BOOK PER HOUSEHOLD ADDRESS.
Applications will be mailed out to previous participants. Qualified households that did not receive the coupons in 2010 may request an application by calling 479-636-7301.
Redeeming the coupons is easy:
On Market Day:
- Bring your coupon booklet with you.
- Bring cash if you would like to purchase processed food, crafts, meats, eggs or other products not listed on the back of your coupon booklet.
- Look for vendors displaying the green sign “We Accept Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupons,” these are the only vendors accepting the coupons.
- Pick out your produce. You can use your coupons to buy most whole, unprocessed produce at farmers’ markets. If you’re unsure, ask the vendor or check the back cover of your coupon booklet.
- You cannot receive cash or credit for unused portions of your coupon. You may mix different types of produce to reach $5.00. For example, you may buy $3.00 worth of tomatoes and $2.00 worth of carrots from a vendor and pay with a sin-gle coupon. Many vendors will also divide large amounts of produce to help you reach $5.00 worth. However, two vendors may not split one coupon.
- Sign on “Participant’s Signature” line and give the coupon to vendor.
- Use as many or as few of your coupons as you wish in a visit to the market, but all coupons must be used by October 25, 2010.
- Try new produce that is affordable and in season. Ask vendors about easy recipes and ways to prepare new foods. They’ll be happy to share their ideas!

If you are home-bound or otherwise unable to attend the Farmer’s Market, you may send someone to purchase your produce for you. When obtaining your coupon book, complete the “Authorized Proxy” form to allow your representative to use your coupons. Your representative will also have to sign the form and each coupon as it is used.
