Frequently Asked Questions about Giving

Here are some questions that donors often ask about OHC:

1. Who benefits from my donation? Who do I help? - The Office of Human Concern provides an array of services to low-income families in Benton, Carroll and Madison counties. Some services are short-term solutions like energy assistance in winter months. Some services are long-term solutions like employment training or housing.

2. Can I designate my donation to a specific service or program? Yes, we have specific needs you can address with your donation. Here are some examples:

  • Community Services - OHC receives calls for help year round. Quite often calls come for energy assistance in off months. OHC is in need of financial contributions for these services.
  • Weatherization Services - OHC operates a very frugal and productive program that insulates, repairs/replaces windows and doors and sealing/caulking to name a few. Due to limited money for materials (Max: $866- 2007), OHC often needs $150-250 more per house for the materials required for repairs. Sometimes the costs go beyond weatherization such as a leaky roof.
  • Senior Services - OHC operates seven senior centers. These centers require support for energy, transportation and food to serve close to 600 seniors each workday of the week. A large portion of those served is home bound. Ongoing support is required for this important program.

3. Are there other needs at OHC that I can support? Yes, we would suggest that you call and discuss with us your interests.

4. What other types of donations do we accept? We accept bonds, stocks and real estate. We have a car donation program as well. Contact the OHC office to learn more about that program.

5. Why would I want to donate to the Office of Human Concern? OHC provides solutions to self-sufficiency for low-income families. Poverty is a persistent issue, but for many families, they want to move on to success in the US. OHC concentrates it's efforts on families that are ready to move forward. For others such as our Seniors, we provide long-term assistance with our centers.

6. Where can I learn more about OHC? For starters, you can download a pdf copy of our Form 990 from our website.

7. Is OHC a non-profit corporation? Yes, we are filed with the Secretary of State of Arkansas as a non-profit corporation operating within Arkansas. We also have been designated a 501 (c)(3) by IRS.

8. I would like a copy of OHC latest audit. How do I go about getting a copy? Please contact the OHC Finance Office (479-636-7301) and request that a copy be mailed to you.

9. How do I determine that the Office of Human Concern is what it says it is? There are several ways to learn about a specific non-profit:

  • First, every non-profit is required to submit a 990 report to the IRS. Guidestar, a non-profit website offers a collection of information on more than 1.5M charities. Go to www.guidestar.org for more information.
  • Second, Reports, brochures, audits, etc, can be helpful in determining what a non-profit is about.
  • Third, contact the Arkansas Attorney General office who maintains information on Arkansas non-profits and on any complaints received.
  • Fourth, contact local United Way offices. Unless the non-profit in question is new grass roots group, a United Way office would have information on local non-profits. In Northwest Arkansas, go to www.unitedwaynwa.org. Then look for 'Agencies and Programs'. There is an A to Z listing of agencies in the area that United Way is working with.
  • Fifth, go on line to www.irs.gov and look in the left column, "Search for Charities", click. Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, is a list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions, will be listed.
